How do you tell the difference between a planetary type pto and a clutch type pto on a Farmall 460 rowcrop?

Planetary will have an adjustment cover on the top to the side, that is a dome shaped oval with a center bolt. about 2.5 inches by 1.25 or so.
The clutch type does not! Jim

Jim is correct. Under the cover are two screws, one to keep the PTO from slipping, the other adjusts a brake.

Look at Colby64 post above, "560 final pictures before paint job". His 560 has the clutch type. His is a later one with the big plug on top that can be removed for adjustment. Also note the lever, this is different between the clutch type and planatary type

I do not think there was much in favor of either . THe pressures had to be controlled on the clutch style, and the linkage had to be correct (and adjustment of the bands) on the planetary. Jim

There are a lot less moving parts in the clutch style. I'm sure it was much cheaper to make.
