So I got a call out of the blue the other day. A guy I know called and wanted to know if I was interested in his super MTA. I said absolutely. So I went to look at the tractor tonite and i found it to be in pretty decent shape. It has a fast hitch. It runs well and the TA seems to be ok. It held well when under load in 5th gear working against the brakes. Tires are good but are not matching and the steering binds badly when turned too far to the left. Also the threads in the manifold are too far gone to fix and the exhaust wobbles. The only sheet metal problem is a small dent in the crown on the front and a dent where the muffler sits above the hood. Needs paint too. The owner doesn't know what he wants for it and i don't know what to offer. I need a fair price because he is a friend of mine and I don't want to s_r_w him and he doesn't want to s_r_w me. If anyone has an idea of what this thing is worth I'd really appreciate the help! Thanks, DK

2500 It is desirable and would be worth 4000 if the tires were new, the muffler was correctly repaired, dents were out, and the tractor was painted. Those will put the total (not including labor) over the 4000 mark. Jim

Sounds like $4000. Paint, tires, and manifold should cost around $2000.

Manifold can probably be repaired with a 2" die. Reasonable on eBay.

I agree, $4,000 in present condition would be fair to both of you. I see a lot of SMTA's in their working clothes advertised for $4,000 -$5,000. I was at a sale this spreing & an average SMTA brought $5,900 and a good original SM brought $4,800

Figure about a six foot cheater bar on wrench. Best to vacuum out chips too.

A mintish original with power steering sold for $2750 this sring in NE IL. Just because they are advertised for 4-5000 doesn't mean they sell.

Yeah, well a pretty well used up one that only ran on 3 cylinders brought $5450 at an auction here in WNY last spring... So you really can't ever tell.

Thanks wardner. I'm thinking more along the same lines you are. This tractor has no power steering. It's nice, but rusty and I forgot to mention that the seat suspension needs some attention. I don't think it's worth any more than 2500 bucks considering all that needs done. I guess if he wants 4000 for it then it just wasnt meant to be.

Location makes a big difference but I will agree with Jim. $2500-2750 is fair and will allow you money to fix what is known and what is not known. There are a LOT of nicer MTA's around for $3-4K. Faded makes little difference. Solid, running, and tight does.

That doesn't mean it was worth it and it certainly doesn't mean they are all worth that.

I think 4000 is a little high in todays market, but also 2500 is low also. I paid 2400 for mine 10 years ago. 3200 to 3500 should be a fair price. You have to figure the paint, sand blasting, primer etc. are going to run you close to 1000.00. I just painted a C farmall last week and the IH paint and the epoxey primer, sand blaster and sand plus reducer etc. cast me in the 400 range and would want to put better paint on a tractor like that. Tire's in todays market are out of sight. Your looking at 1500 for 13.6's and 1700 range for 14.9. At 3500 with paint and tires alone your in the 6000 to 6500 range. Believe me your still looking a 1500 to 2000 for the small items you don't see now. Ed

Are you sure it sold for that amount. I bidded on a 230 a couple of years ago and it went for 3750.oo. Couple of weeks later it was on tractorhouse for 3500.00. The owner was the high bidder, just trying to run the price up. That goes on a lot at auctions in my area. Once you know the auction people you can tell who is bidding on there tractors.

I gave $600.00 for one six years ago. Two years ago had it put on a dynometer and it checked out above NE tests. TA worked great. So, replacement of axle seals, etc., etc., etc. new fronts, and with a very fine paint job I got way above what you all are talking.
AND STILL lost on it!

Mine was $1800 about that long ago.

exhaust manifold repair. I have an M that had a wallered out exhaust manifold. Too far gone to rethread. I dressed the top of the manifold flat with a file. Bought a two inch pipe elbow and sawed the threads off with a band saw. I dressed the face of the threads flat with a file. I drilled eight holes around the dia. of the threads. 1/4 dia. Then I counter bored the holes for allen wrench type bolts. Next I drilled and tapped the exhaust manifold, made a gasket and put it all together. It has been holding up well and occasionally pushes a tree limb out of the way. This sounds a lot more complicated than it really is, and it is really cheap to do. Ellis Kinney.

My dad just bought an MTA about a month ago in swmn and paid 4750 He bought it on a farm sale from the farmer who bought it new. It is in great shape with very good paint. narrow front, good back tires. Most MTA's around here are worth 3800+
