1949 H hydraulics

I just bought an H and hooked it up to my NH 472 haybine and tried to lift the cutter head up with the tractors liftall hydraulic system and nothing. The tractor won't lift the haybine. The 472 is a 7' mower conditioner and has a 2x8 cylinder and I would think the H shouldn't have any problem lifting it. I put a test guage on the tractor's hydraulic outlet and it puts out about 800 psi. Does anybody have any expierance using an H with a haybine? Are the factory hydraulics not strong enough to lift this little mower? or is there something wrong with the pump?

You're gonna need at least a 3 inch or maybe a 3 1/2 inch cylinder to make it work with that low pressure hyd system.

By the way if you got 800 psi out of it, you're doing good. That's about all they had when new.

Thanks. I also thought that maybe I didn't have enough fluid to lift the mower after it filled up the line and cylinder since the system only holds 6 qts. The hydraulic line running back to the mower is 12 or 13 feet. Any thoughts on that?

A 3x8 cylinder holds about one quart. A 1/2 in x 12 ft hose will hold abouta pint. If your reservoir is full you should be good to go. I think back in the day, IH sepcified 3 in. cylinders for some applications.

I lift a 9" hay bind with my M and it has a a lot of hose. The hydraulics on my M is no where as good as on my H. If you have enough oil you may want to try a heavier oil. The book says 30wt but a lot of guys use Hytran. Hydraulic oil, if it gets hot won't lift anything - I found that out with my H plowing short fields. Dealer once told me to put 40 wt in my M if the 30wt didn't work well.

This is correct. A Farmall with 800 is great.
To make it work, put a 3.5 cylinder on it (no issue then) Jim

I have a 1949 H and run a NH 461 with it which is a 9' cut, but the head has springs to make it float so it is pretty light. I am not familiar with the 472. I have a 2.5"x8 cylinder on mine.
