metallic dust in IH distributor

I've got a bit of a franken tractor. It's actually an Allis Chalmers C but was retrofitted with an IH distributor and changed to a coil and points system by a previous owner. Lately I've noticed an accumulation of metallic dust inside the cap and it got to the point where one of the plugs didn't fire. After blowing it out the tractor ran well for awhile, but something tells me this thing needs lubrication somewhere, but not having any IH knowledge I thought I'd ask here.

Thanks,

Scott Todd

Check and see if the rotor is rubbing any of the cap posts. Its usually caused bu the wrong cap or rotor ot improperly installed cap.

Under the rotor the cam is hollow. There is supposed to be a piece of felt in there to hold lubricating oil. A couple of drops once a year is all it needs. That is what lubricates the cam movement on the distributor shaft.

The other place that needs lubrication is the advance mechanism under the breaker plate. It should be lubricated with a soft grease at the time of an engine overhaul. It would not hut to take a look at that every 5 - 10 years.
