2404/404 3 point hitch question

maybe a 504 or 544 utility (not the farmall 544)? definitely need to compare part numbers between models on the case ih parts pages as 404s are kind of their own thing.

You shouldn't say tractors are worthless without a 3 point as pre 1960s millions of farmers got along fine, but I feel like I agree with you anyway from today's standpoint.

I have a Farmall 404 and am afraid your chances of finding a 3 point hitch for yours is limited to the 404/2404 models. The 404 is a cat. 1 3pt and the 504 3 pt hitches I have seen are cat.2. The factory top links for a 404 are a bear to find also, though any aftermarket cat. 1 toplink will work. Wish I had better news, but those are your choices.Good luck, you never know when you might stumble onto something-thats half the fun of the hobby for me.

the lift arms and anchors might be different, but
the guts of the lift cover might be the same as a
504, because mass producers avoid limiting the
use of their parts. so like I said check the parts
pages out. Whole assemblies are typically
cheaper at a salvage yard than piecing it out but
you never know until you find the stuff if you can
get it all at once.

I have thought about this some more and If you don't need draft control, maybe a saginaw hitch would be an easy option.

I also looked on caseih parts site for you. Lift cylinder housing is same part number between utility and Farmall models of both 404 and 504. part number 389524R91 "HOUSING ASSY, hyd lift."
The differences I feel are going to be the cat 1 vs cat 2 arms and the lift arm anchors. 504 and 404s had toplink draft sensing, so everything is just about contained in that lift housing. the 544 IH utility still used toplink sensing, so don't overlook that one as a possibility.

A little research goes a long way, and there's more to do to find out for sure what works, and any additional pumps or valving that would be needed for the 3 point. Some universal farm store parts may work for the external parts too.

this is pure guessing: being the 404 is derived from the C, it's possible the fast hitch from a 240/230 (and then probably 200 and super C although they were smaller pronged) would still bolt up, then you'd just add the 3 point adapter prongs and stock 404 toplink bracket. Find another IH remote valve you can dedicate to the hitch and away you go. To prove my fast hitch theory you'll be on your own in junkyards with a notepad, tape measure, and cardboard templates.

karl, I`ll have to look at my tractors and compare. I have a Super C, 230,240 and 404. I`m pretty sure the Super C and 200 fast hitch won`t work without some engineering because the seat/tool box was used as a hinge point for the hydraulic cylinder. The other 2 models are better possibilities- I`ll have to see if the bosses are on the transmission housing on the 404 where the FH mounts would bolt up.
