Splitting M Question

I had removed the belly pump, clutch and short shaft between the clutch and front transmission coupler of a 47 M so I could replace bearings and seals on the transmission countershaft and upper shaft.

I see the flywheel surface has small cracks and it appears the rear crankshaft seal is leaking. As I understand, the tractor will need to be split to remove flywheel for machining and also to fix the seal -- Is that correct?

It may be a while before splitting, so I am considering putting the clutch, drive shaft and belly pump back in the tractor now. Assume I would put in a new throw out bearing now.
Can you split the tractor and get it back together with the belly pump installed? Or do you guys remove the pump for better access? Thanks.

The cracks are pretty normal in the FW, but the oil leak will require a split.
The pump is for sure in the road of getting it apart and back together. Jim

I split my M once without taking out the pump and had alot of trouble lining up the splines on the clutch shaft - ended up wrarping the plate. I think its easier to remove the pump.

Keith,
There is no reason to remove the hyd pump to replace the rear engine seal on the crankshaft. Once the engine is rolled away (split) from the center section, the flywheel is right out in the open. You remove the clutch assembly then you are able to get at the flywheel. Once you have that heavy thing off the seal can be replaced. Make sure you check the condition of the gear teeth on the flywheel, Now would be the time to flip the gear over if you discover any bad looking teeth. Check out my web site for ideas about splitting stands.
