450D Power Steering one more time...

Got the power steering pump mounted, the shafts hooked up and bolted in place. Hooked up the pressure and return hoses up and went to try it. This was NOT a factory PS tractor keep in mind. Started up the tractor, no ps until one of the control levers is pushed. I believe I need a regulator / safety valve. Does this go in place of the one I currently have? Also I am reading about a priority valve, how does that fit into all of this and where does it go??
Thanks to all!

The standard set of valves on a tractor with no PS will not have the priority valve built in. The valve you need (if you want to have it like stock) is from a tractor with PS. I think it is the inner control valve. A seperate pump can be used driven by the engine and it will be reliable and pretty easy. A non stock priority valve can also be purchased (Surplus Center has them reasonably priced). The system is not pressurized unless a valve is operated when it is the way you describe. Jim

This is why you need to do your homework (or read the directions) before starting a job.

Goto the CaseIH on-line parts book. It will show you that you need a PS regulator to replace what is there. You will also need a different first valve, a J-tube, and a plug that fits between the first valve and manifold.

You need everything in the pic to convert a 300/350 or 400/450 to factory power steering.

Mine is a factory unit (with the tower plug in place) All the correct equipment in place and mine does the same thing. I have almost memorized my service manual, but Im still working on it.
