H4 magneto question

On H4 magnetos, why do some impluse drive members have square lugs and others round? Is there a difference between the two? Is a round-lugged one stamped "R" the same as a square lugged one without a stamp? and is there any reason it should not work on a Farmall A/B?
I"ve got one (round-lug) that I put on a B and it timed correctly when mounted, but engine ran ROUGH!!!!! Put another (square-lug) on and it ran smooth. Of course, there might be something else going on, but the difference in impluse couplings caught my eye.
Thanks in advance for the expert advise.

I could be wrong on this, but from the limited number of them I've seen, it looks to me like the H-4 magnetos have the square drive lugs. The J-4 (Cub) magnetos have the round lugs. (I'm willing to be corrected on this.) The Cub magneto has a much smaller lag angle (13) than the H-4 (35). That is a big difference and may be the explanation of the problem you had with the B.

Jim, you are spot on. The round pegs on the implulse indicate a J4 mag, and it should show that on the serial number area. Square pegs are the H4. The caps are different and yes the timing is different. However, internally, they are very similar, except the shape/size of the coil. J4 is for Cub and C-60 power units. H4 is for everything else IH made in the 40's and 50's if it had 4 cylinders.
