sickle mower pitman arm length

I am trying to rehab an old sickle bar mower. I know
its an IH and I think its a model 28 (fast hitch).
Does anyone know how long the pitman arm is supposed
to be?

I hear these things can be a pain to work on. Any
suggestions?

One more thing. Other than getting the pitman arm
length correct, how does one adjust the timing?

Well if it is a model 28 then the pitman is 35-11/16 long as per my catalog but that is also the same for the 10, 16, 21, 24, and the 32 all of those use the same one. As for timing one when it is all the way out and all the way end the sections should be close to being centered in the guards

centered in the guards means that the tip of each blade is under the tip of each guard? And thanks for the length. probably saved me from going insane.

As far as centering the blades... is there another way of doing that other that getting the arm length correct?

As you can tell, I havn't tried to do it yet. Ive just been staring at it.

That is correct. The tip of each section should line up with the tip of each guard at both ends of travel.

Even if you have the correct pitman stick length, you will probably need to time the bar and guards. On my 22 mowers, the head is threaded on to the arm, and timing is done by screwing the arm in or out of the head as appropriate.

I had to make my own for a sickle bar mower I have on my BA part B part A. Any how all I could find was the universal type pit mans so I had to cut and drill my own holes. I knew about how long it needed to be because of the catalog I have. I then mounted the one end and then ran it all the way in clamped the pit man to the pieces then ran it all the way out to make sure that both ways it had the sections close to center in each guard and also pushed the bar out as far as it should go. When pushed out the last section has to go out side of the last guard a bit or the end will clog up. Hope that helps. I am lucky that I have a manual for one for a A/C B/C mower so it tells me a lot and if it would help you let me know and I can send you that manual by way of e-mail

Allright thanks everyone. I'll begin the task sometime soon. I may take you up on the offer for the manuals. I'll wait until just before I start throwing wrenches. Thanks again. I'm very grateful.

Oh believe me I understand how a pit man can cause a person to want to throw things and even worse start pulling your hair out and when you get old you have little hair to pull out LOL
