Farmall Cub w/Low Speed kit

I just started the process of restoring my 1950 Cub. It is unusual because it is equipped with a low speed kit on the left side of the differential and mounted where the left wheel would normally be attached to the differential. It slows the forward speed making enough power for the attached rototiller and other attachments, like the fast hitch woods mower. The tractor locked up in gear when doing some landscaping with the grader blace hence the reason for the restoration. I am confident the problem is in the low speed gear box because transmission inspections shows no missing gears or teeth. In the event the low speed shift unit is toast, I am starting a search to find if another unit might be available to replace the original. I appreciate any information you folks might know about available units.

That attachment is very difficult to find, and desirable. The trans probably got into two gears at once. The reason is that the tip of the shifter gets worn and slips out of the gear it is in, then when put in another is in 2 gears. Lock up. The odds are pretty good this is the case. Put the shift rails back into alignment, then put the shifter into the slot.
Welding the tip up some if you can see it is worn will help dramatically. I have never seen one of the creeper setups lock for any reason.
If the trans/powertrain is still locked, a bolt or bearing component could be jambed in the final drive. Do not force anything, it will break castings, Best of luck. Jim

I saw one of the planetary reduction boxes at the New England (Chapter 18) meet last week in Dublin, NH. Price was $585. He also had a Hub City Cub PTO speed increaser/reverser.

Bad news is that I don't know the guys name. If you contact the Chapter president, he may be able to help. I think the seller was the second or third vendor along the disheveled stone wall that separates the vendors from the field of tractors. He would have been within 60' of the Chapter tent/headquarters.

As for two gears engaging in the Cub transmission, I don't think that is a common failure mode on a Cub. It is quite common on the H and M and similar. But Jim is correct. It should be investigated first.

I have 3 of the gear reductions. They were made by the Howard rotovator company. Sorry none of mine are for sale. The howard despeeders tend to pop out of gear and go into neutral. If it's locked up, something internal has come loose and is jamed inside.

More than likely the transmission has jumped into 2 gears, if you pull the shift cover, you can see if the gear clusters have shifted and jammed.

Save for 1 seal, nobody makes any parts for the despeeders, so if it is broken, short of buying another one to fix it, your best bet is talking to a machine shop to see if they can make some new parts.

Also, the despeeders are NOT a low range, they are made to simply slow the tractor down. If you are using it to increase the pulling or pushing power of the cub, you will blow up parts, and quickly.

With the despeeder in direct drive, you can use a cub like normally, just be very careful using it in slow range.
