My fan belt adjuster will not turn. I have set screw out, doused with PB in threads. Chain vise grip holding backside and have hammered the notches with a punch fairly hard. No go.
Any suggestions on getting it to turn?
I am replacing front seal and all the gaskets.
Thanks, Mark

well for one thing you are really screwing it up so to speak. its the piece with the chain tong on that has to turn! you wont turn what ur hammering on.bet if you tap on the proper spot it will come loose and turn.there is spots on it also to hammer on.try that.

Front piece has notches in it to strike. I got a hold of the back piece to keep the whole pulley from turning on me.
I am sure it has not been moved in over 30 years. Mark

yes you do , but thats wrong!you need to turn the outer half of pulley that your holding. the belt will hold the inner half that your pounding on. AND you DONT HAMMER in those notches.there is tabs to tap on the outer half.

Rustred is correct.
I will point out that the chain wrench is squeezing the ring that needs to get loose to turn. The inertia of the part you are whacking is much greater than the adjuster. Thus you are hitting the heavier thing to shock the lighter.
Put propane torch heat on the ring.
then tap it with a brass hammer on the two Bosses (one of which is near the Vice grip chain wrench) not steel. The chain wrench also twists into even more compression when it is under stress. Jim

Bad wording on my part. Been hitting the tabs, not the notches down in the threads.
Belt is not tight enough to hold pulley. Mark

I was concerned heating the outer ring would ruin the packing. Does not leak, bearing felt good did not want to take pump apart. Mark

thats not what the pic shows. can see where your hitting it. the tabs are coverd with the chain. may need to do as jim tells you, warm it up with torch.

The belt should be loose enough to be pushed in a little more than an inch with your thumb pushing as hard as you can. If it is tighter, it will be too tight, and wear the fan/wp bearings. They do adjust, they are a pain. When freed up, put anti sieze compound on the threads. Jim
