I was wondering if anyone knew if you could put a pto clutch from a 400 onto an M without changing the whole rear. I'm not looking for "live" pto, just the ability to start and stop the pto without stopping the tractor while spraying or spreading. Thanks for any help.

Different animals...The M's PTO is driven by the transmission, the 400s is driven directly by the engine via some pretty unique engineering...

On an M, there is no way to make it so that you can start the PTO without pushing in the clutch and thereby stopping the forward motion of the tractor. You can stop the PTO while moving, just push down on the rod that engages the PTO.

The only way you can do that is to put the clutch housing and rear end of the 400 on the M. If you are spraying, use the on-off valve on the sprayer. I don't know what kind of spreader you have.

Well, there was a way, by installing an M&W hand clutch. But those are no longer available so essentially there is no way.

M&W hand clutches are still available used, I have bought and sold several of them the past several years. Rick said he needed to be able to start and stop the PTO without stopping the tractor, an M&W hand clutch will not do this. What it does is allow you to stop and start forward motion of the tractor without interrupting power to the PTO, ideal for baling, combining, shredding, picking corn etc... You still have to push in the foot clutch to engage the PTO.

What you are looking for is what a live PTO is.
