manifold problems

Good morning guys:
The new farmall m that I just bought needs a muffler and manifold pipe; The problem is.
1. manifold pipe was wielded in and the wield brokelose and the threads inside of manifold are
all screwd up to the point that It is impossible
to screw another pipein, what now? other than buying a new manifold.

MANY THANKS

two options,
remove manifold and take to machine shop and let them repair it, will likly be costly, or locate another manifold.

I was just thinking if i were to do what the first person did, but not wield it, can a person
kinda wedge in a pipe and drill the manifold and put a bolt in it.

thanks

Find a welder who knows how to weld and install a nipple just long enough to clear the hood. I would suggest a rod like Nickalloy or stainless as a second choice. (Nickalloy easy to machine). Brazing could work too, but the manifold should be taken off so the job can be done in a comfortable position. Another possibility is make friends with a machinist and borrow his 2" NPT tap and fix the threads. (tap is $150-200). If you choose the welding repair, you will need to drill and tap two 3/8" holes and install set screws to push on the bottom of the nipple from opposite sides. Welding a ring around a pipe will reduce it's diameter and the bottom of the pipe will be loose in the manifold. Thus, the bottom of the pipe is free to swing back and forth, fatiguing the weld. Fritz

Nope, the stress on the pipe is heavy enough to wiggle it loose. If you clean it up with an abrasive disk on a 4" hand held grinder, it can be tapped as I indicated earlier. If you are careful, it will even look good. The threads rust between the pipe and the cast iron of the manifold. as they deteriorate, the strength goes away. One of the most prevalent and destructive factors is that water flows down the exhaust pipe i=on the outside and enters the engine through the bad fit of pipe to manifold.
Because the tap cost so much, it is often passed by, and some coupling is welded on. (usually with 6011 plain steel rod. That can never work.)
The tapered pipe threads are easily tapped deeper into the manifold.
If you can
t clean it up enough to tap, having a Nirod welded coupling put on it professionally, allows the visible part of the pipe to be replaced as needed. Been there many times, Jim

You can weld them. I have ran my SMTA for over 5 years welded on. It is my tractor pulling tractor so it really gets fatigued going 70 mph down the freeway on teh trailer.

Super Missle rod is the way to go. High nickel rod with preheat is 10+ year old technology. There are a lot better ways to go than that now days. If you are near Elkhorn, WI I had RC Welding do my SMTA.

I would buy a pipe and slit it a couple times and try to clean up the hole before I went welding it.

Many thanks guys:
A friend of mine knew a guy that weilded his up, so we calld him. He drilled 3/8 bolt hole
threw the manifold threw the pipe and to the other side just below the top ring manifold rim.
the threads. then he taped the hole and ran the bolt clear threw and nuted it. It kinda looks like this. By the way I am no artest. ok. and he used a stainless steal rod, I hope it works. He use's this Idea on all of his pulling tractors.
He has for years.
AGAIN THANKS

I have retapped 3 of mine. Got the pipe tap from Northern. It was in a set of three, and so far the 2" tap is the only one I have used. It takes some patience and a generous helping of muscle. After retapping, a new 2" pipe screwed in easily after several years all 3 are still very tight.

I have borrowed the HUGE pipe tap and done mine after breaking the exaust off twice now, just like the other poster said,it WILL take a little effort to do so.use at least a 24" cresent,or equivelent on tap.BE CAREFULL !!! (And,be sure to put an oil soaked rag in the manifold to catch chips/shavings,if leaving it on the engine.)Cleanliness will save on engine damage!!!!

you can take it to a machine shop --have them bore out the casting and weld in a female nipple -- screw in a new pipe and you are good to go-- you wont outlive the repair good luck-- Roy Prins

I brazed mine on a long long time ago and it works great! I had to replace the pipe once and that's when brazing comes in handy. Just melt the bronze and pull the old pipe out. try that with a weld job.
