H starting problem

Need some assistance. 48 H (gas) and mag ignition will start, run 2-3 seconds and quit. Had been running fine. rebuilt carb (and getting gas), new points condenser and rotor. I"m thinking its related to magneto. will start and die, wait 5 minutes same thing. would appreciate any ideas where to start.

Getting gas to the carb is not the same as getting it to the air flowing in. Checking the float action, abd assuring it is filling the bowl is important.
If the condenser is bad in the Mag, it can also have this effect. Point gap is .013" on the high point of the breaker cam. Be sure to keep the rotor in time with the cam gear in the Mag.

Carb bowl is filling. Just took out the new condenser and put back in the original, same thing- start, run 2-3 seconds and die, wait 5 minutes start run and die.

With the Mag #1 plug wire attached to a spair sparkplug, ground the plug and shade it from direct light so as to be able to see it. Watch the plug as the engine is started. If the spark quits, you have a direction to search. If it still sparks, it may be in that carb. There is a screen in the inlet to the carb fitting that can plug up radically and isn't obvious. Jim

Still have spark as and after it shuts off so guess it's carb related. I'll pull it off and check float setting and make sure all the passages are clear.
Thanks for the assistance.

Just cause the bowl fills with gas don't mean that the flow is fast enough to keep up.

I don't think yer going to find a plugged passage. Sounds like it's in the tank or at least before the needle and seat. Bowl is filling with gas, gas is run out of the bowl and you don't have enough fuel flow to keep up. Thats why it starts and run again in 5 min or so for another brief time. So check the flow at the carb. With a clean container disconnect the fuel line or open the bleeder on the bowl and catch that liquid gold in the clean can. Should be a steady stream of gas coming out for a couple of minutes.

Most of the time if it's the coil or condenser it will run a little longer than 5 min and require a 15 min or so cool down before running again.

Remove the air cleaner cup to check if it has dirt built up to the point that it is shutting off the air flow. Same thing with air intake hoses---a flap of rubber from the inside of the hose can block air flow.

When it quits running pull off a plug wire and see if there's fire to the plug. You need to do this asap when it quits. If there's no fire, I would first replace the condenser and see if the engine will stay running. If there's still no fire you probably need a new coil in the mag.
