IH 404 hydraulic question

Fellas- I sold my dead Super A (OK, it was only crippled, but beyond the point where I could save it) and bought a "63 IH 404. I"m real happy with the 404. Radiator holds water. Doesn"t use oil. Starts and runs like a champ. Works hard.

A little while back, I had a problem with the lift raising. It wouldn"t. I pulled the seat off and took the cover off of the box underneath. I"m assuming this is the hydraulic reservoir. I could see thst the intake line was above the level of the fluid. 2 quarts of fluid later, I was back in business. Good deal.

I have looked all over this tractor and can"t find any other way to check the hyd. fluid level. Am I missing something (Other than common sense), or is it possible that the good people at IH meant for you to have to pull the cover off every time you check or add fluid?

HI
Check for a plug just behind the shift lever and a tad to the right.
The fluid level check is another plug just behind the left axle,I don't have a manual but i think this IS correct.
They are a good little tractor. Hope this helps.

Thanks Ralph. I saw that plug you mentioned near the shift lever, but assumes it was for gear oil. It's well below the level of the reservoir. Do I add Hytrans there until it's even with the check plug you mentioned?

I have a 424 (similar setup, I THINK) and the Operator's manual says to add hydraulic fluid 'til the level is up to the BOTTOM of the hole where the fill plug goes.

Doesn't make sense, and I figured there was supposed to be a dipstick in there 'til I got my manual, but, NO dipstick, that's the way it is.

I SUSPECT your 404 is similar.

I added a gallon of fluid and the lift picked up. Wouldn"t go back down. I decided I"d get more fluid tomorrow and went to put my tools up. While I was putting the tools back in the truck, the mower hit the ground with a bang. Cranked the tractor again and the lift raises and lowers as it should. I still haven"t found the "Fill to here" plug.

Thanks for the advice and information guys.

My 67? 404 has a check hole on the right side of the case remove the allen set screw & fill till it dribbles.
