Farmall 560 too tall...

Hey all, I'm normally in the Massey area but we bought a fresh rebuild Farmall 560 to run while I'm restoring the 165. The issue is the thing is too tall! I noticed in Tractordata the standard 560 was a bit lower to the ground and isn't so long (my other major gripe). Whats the best way to get this thing back to a useable height/length? If it didn't run so darn good I'd just throw it back on the market, but this thing is GREAT power/fuel saving wise!!!

I don't even know where to start looking here in Springfield IL.

Thanks folks!

There is not much you can do other than putting an elbow on the exhaust and then supporting the muffler forward and then a tip to turn it away.
Smaller wider wheels would work to a degree, but would sure change the way it drives, and the speed would be off (% of circumference change)
Trading for a Wheatland model would work, but finding one locally is difficult.
Raising the door header might be the answer, or leaving it Outside (less desirable). You will learn to love it enough to add it to the farm rather than selling it when the Massey is back in action! Jim

I do not understand your complaint. I like to be able to look out and
see where I am going instead of down inside the tractor like an AC
D-17 or MF 135. Does it not fit in your shed, or are you just not
used to sitting up over the tractor? A 560 standard will be a bit
lower, but quite a bit less handy to get on and off, and moving
around the farm. Good Luck

Maybe you have a Hi-Crop version. If you look at the pics on tractordata, the front spindles will be higher than the fron tires by a few inches instead of about level.
I'm thinking you are just used to lower tractors if you are into M-H or MF. the 6 cyl. Farmalls did seem like pretty long tractors compared to other brands of their day.

I'm not great with the details, but here is a picture of it-

And one of the hills on our lot-

Its mowed the 5 acres in about half the time the little ole Massey could. We'll be plowing the field up this fall, and I think that is where this tractor will shine.

I just noticed the normal 560 was a bit lower to the ground (shorter tires), and had a shorter wheel base and didn't know if the swap had been done or was readily available.

Many would consider yours a normal 560, or as it was officially known a Row Crop. You must be used to smaller utility type tractors. Your tractor also has a Schwartz wide front on it with some pretty large flotation tires, it would be shorter in the front if you put stock sized tires on it. As far as the height and length go, it's just a row crop tractor, they are just about all that way, across the different brands.

Other than the Schwartz wide front and wide tires, it looks just like the one my uncle Vic had... nothing unusual about the height or length for a [u:545768a4ae]Farmall[/u:545768a4ae] 560. If you like MFs, you'll LOVE that 560.

They came from the factory with 12.4 x 38 rear tires,
and 6.00 x 16 front tires, both narrow & wide front.

The good thing over utility style tractors is you are up a bit higher & are up out of all the bugs.

I'd be willing to bet more came with 13.6 x 38 or even wider rears.... Dad's 460 had 13.6s on it and it had the originals on it when he got it as a few years old. I know tractordata shows 12.4s, but I think that's wrong... they would have a hard time holding a 60hp tractor.

(quoted from post at 13:06:07 08/20/11) Guess I'll put some new front tires and tie rods on it, then be happy with it :D

Leave the tires alone unless they are shot. You will appreciate the wide tires in soft ground, and it's a lot of money to spend just to gain a couple of inches at most.

The 560 came with 15.5x38 rears most of the time. Sometimes you'll find them with pressed steel rear wheels and 18.4x34 tires, though.

You need to put 16.9x38s on the tractor for it to set level, but then it's even taller and it really messes with the ground speed.

Weird off topic question, were you ever on any Ohio based racing forums? I know I've seen this username before.

Cincyspeed, Columbusracing, Limaracing, and whatever Dayton's site was. I'm not on the Miata/LS1 sites and back home since I just finished the LS1 Miata build.

Had an Arctic White WS6, then a Pewter FRC. Went to UNOH for auto/diesel/and a few highpo classes.

By the way- This thing has milky oil right now so I'm done with the Farmall. Its being traded in the first chance I get :(
