sediment bowl gasket

The sediment bowl started leaking on my H. The rubber gasket is bad, but couldnt find a rubber replacement. Bought the cork gasket, and it continues to leak. Any ideas?

I've made my own ones from cork before and they worked fine. Are you sure yours is correctly located in the sediment bowl head? I've seen some that were small enough to move around quite a bit and didn't completely seal against the glass bowl. Sam

Might be that the glass bowl is chipped, or maybe the mating surface is corroded? Sometimes you just need to tighten the bejeebers out of the thumb nut. I usually tighten it with pliers.

Really not too much that can go wrong there, as long as the glass isn't chipped, or something obvious like that.

I know the first few times I had trouble with one leaking was because I wasn't tightening it enough. I was always afraid I'd like I'd break the glass.

To this date, I've never cracked a glass.

I say just tighten it till it stops.

Worst case scenario, you need to buy a new glass, and they're cheap.

Sometimes that pot metal gets distorted from overtightening. I have a tube of food grade silicone that works good to help them seal.

Thanks for the info. I'll try tightening up some. It's the right size, i was just a little afraid of cutting it if i tightened it too much.

Most of the cork type need to have gas on them for a little bit to seal up because they will swell some. I drop them in gas for a few minutes before I put them on so as to help that. Of course things like chipped glass or piece of the old gasket etc will also cause that problem

I like to turn the gas on until bowl fills, shut it off and let that cork gasket soak. Tighten a little more maybe and then turn it on. If it leaks then most likely the pot metal is warped out of shape. Those heavy cork gaskets are very forgiving though for irregular surfaces.

I prefer the rubber ones. The local NAPA store here carries them in two different sizes.

When you tighten the bowl, give it a small back-and-forth twist right before it gets too tight to twist it. Just a small twist is all it needs. Seems to set it in place. Doesn't work every time but it helps. Jim

Yes, giving the bowl that last little twist back and forth ensures that it IS seated and NOT slanted off to one side.
