my pump keeps blowing by new hydraulic seal, parts guy says- without looking at it- that pump is worn out. before i spend megabucks on a new or rebuilt pump, any way to determine pump realy is bad or was the blowing seals the sympton? it also fills the base with hydraulic fluid. thanks

You can pull distributor adapter housing off and put a couple of screwdrivers under and above the the distributor drive to see if the shaft of pump will move up and down. If you feel shaft moving at all pump is shot. Have to be able to determine it is not just the drive lug that is moving of course. I will ask, did you secure the seal by staking or using loctite. I have saved a few for a while that way after it just pushed the seal out. A grooved shaft will let seal leak but not push it out. Notice, the original seals were staked in place.

when the gear is on you can get in and out play but not any up and down play. shaft is nice and smooth, seals were loctited and staked but we may have bent the new seals because there seems to be space around one side and not the other?

The end spring plate (complex metal stamping) has a bypass return function which assures the oil leaking past the side of the gears, returns to the input (suction) side of the setup. This should provide a path that eliminates all but minimum near gravity levels of pressure on the seal. It is not a high pressure seal at all. End play is an indication of excessive wear, If it is more than .001, I would say it needs to be replaced. Nwe are pricy, and rebuilt are possible, but I have no sources to recommend. If the pump was taken apart it is very possible to put it together such that the above mentioned plate is on the pressure side, it will blow the seals out immediately. Jim

thanks for the info, we didn't end up taking it apart so its not the plate thing. i guess we'll order some more seals, we may have bent them putting them in, they look concaveish, try that first but it probably is just a worn out pump. they sell one on here, cheapist i've found, but still pricey. 300 was my first tractor so i'm partial to it. thanks again, kevin
