Engine rev after carb overhaul

Please help! I took the carb off of my 300 utility today. I replaced the float valve and ever so slightly bent the float so that it measured the correct distance. I reassembled the whole thing and started it up. The engine revs at a high RPM. Closing the throttle cuts it down a little but it still revs way too high. Backing out the idle screw does nothing. I feel like I screwed something up in the governor but I don"t know. The only thing I could think of would be if I didn"t connect the throttle arm to the governor correctly. but I move the throttle and everything seems to be fine in the governor. I am at a total loss. Please help! thanks in advance!!

When you reassembled the carb to the shaft coming from the governor it sounds like you didn't get the tang on the shaft into the slot on the carb.

Yeah... that was the hard part for sure. I thought I did. I tried twice. Is there a trick to know if you got it for sure. It takes me 15 min to get the carb off. the bolts are in such a stupid spot. any trick to getting it back together the right way?

You just have to look in as you're putting it together. When you get it together make sure it stays as it'll jump out of the slot if you let it come apart just a little. good luck

Yeah, what he said. If you only had to try twice to get it right you are about 20 times better than me.

No it took me about 100 tries to get it on. Then I
hook every thing up... revs too much.. take it
apart. Try 100 more times. put it together again,
revs too high. I will be taking apart for the 3rd
time tomorrow.

That sounds more accurate  It is a _____.

Light is the secret. If you are outside in sunlight it is difficult to see the tang and slot. In a shop a small flash light pin points it so you can actually see it. Of course, if you unhook the other end of the governor control shaft and know what you are feeling for it is really simple. I always like to do that anyway so gov adjustment can be checked because when you remove carb it may change some. If you have a half moon wrench that back nut is pretty easy also. Maybe you have a loader on tractor and of course that always makes things difficult.
