Farmall M Hydraulics

I would like to know more about my '52 M's hydraulics:

1) How it works (basics)
2) Why some of the outlets do not have stop-plugs in them (never seemed to need them)

Is there a manual specific to this? There doesn't seem to be much in the owners manual. Is there any recommended reading to better understand the M's live hydraulics or hydraulics in general. I hope to utilize it with future attachments (front loader, 3-pt. hitch).

Thanks for any advice.

I'm assuming you have a belly pump. If it has a coupling then the pump turns all the time but only creates pressure when you pull the handle. It will stop working anytime you push in the clutch. It will only work a one way cylinder unless you add a valve for 2 way operation. Your pump should have oil in it all the time even if you aren't using it unless its disconnected. Your outlets should have plugs to prevent water and dirt from getting into the system. If you pull the lever to get pressure without the plugs it will spray oil all over the place.

Allen if you go to Bates Corporation Bourbon, In. (1-800-248-2955) they have several differnt manuals for a M. Charlie described the non - live hydraulic system and he's right the couplers should covered to keep dirt out. But from what I read you have live-hydraulic system and the pump for that should be mounted just in front of distributor. As for the outlets if they are in good shape they will not leak. They are designed to shut off flow when you disconnect them.

Charlie is correct. 53 stage II SM had live hydraulics (all ms can have it retrofitted in several ways) yours is probably a belly pump.
If it has oil in it, and the drive shaft from the trans to the pump is installed, and the pump is OK, pulling the lever will get oil everywhere.
all the ports are pressure with rod out, hold with rod at the stop tang, and lower with the rod pushed in. the front two ports are normal and connected together inside with effectively a "T". The left rear port is a delay action port, and unless you are using a tillage tool that uses it chould be Plugged. See Many posts on this topic. Jim

Allen If your m has a belly pump you will only have hydraulic preasure when clutch is let out. When you push in the clutch the hydraulic pump stops. If your M has been fitted with live hydraulic pump you will have hydraulic preasure all the time. The pump for a live hydraulic system is mounted just ahead of the distributor.

Thanks for the information. The pump is a belly pump (located near the clutch housing). I obviously did not know much about the live-hydraulics but do recall conversations about the subject with my dad (maybe we were talking about live PTO instead). There is no pump near the distributor. - so much to learn but very enjoyable.

The next time I go to the farm (a week or so) I'll post some pictures of it. Grandpa had quite a bit of plumbing added (for cultivator, mower, loader, etc.) that I'd like to clean it up a bit and make sure the open ports(?) are covered.
