Ignition???

My IH 400 will not stay running unless I hold the ignition key in the "start" position. I thought the ignition switch was bad so I replaced it today and it is still doing the same thing. It will start but as soon as I let off the key it dies, again it will stay running as long as I hold the key in the start position. Anyone have an idea what the problem may be? Thanks in advance for any advice.

If it has a resistor in-line to the coil, it could be bad. An easy way to tell is take a jumper wire from one side of the resistor to the other side. If it stays running, that is the culprit. BT

Iffffffffff the tractor uses a 6 volt coil with a series in line ballast resistor between ign switch and coil I agree with BT in NE.

If thats what it has and its (the ballast) bad/open or a wire is bad/open/broke off etc the coil is gettign voltage ONLY WHILE IN THE STARTING MODE.

Put a 6/12 test lamp on the coils input (NOT to distributor side) and turn the ignition on and it should glow. If not and it only glows when shes cranking, then the ballast or a wire from or to the ballast to the coil is baddddddddd.

If alls well with the ign on and if points are closed there oughta be around 6 volts at the coils input but when you crank her over it should rise to battery voltage.

Just got back to working on the tractor today. I changed the resistor and the tractor is running great again! Thank you so much for your replies. Going out to mow the hay now...Cat
