826 Hydro with no reverse

Hey Guys. I've posted about this tractor before. Early spring we were cutting hay with it & suddenly the clutch (foot&inch valve) quit working, it went forward no matter where you put the selector lever, & selector lever kept creeping up as you traveled across the field. After much headbanging & cussing, and help from here I finally found the snap ring holding the reverse pressure relief valve had broke & let the valve come apart. I have replaced it & the clutch works, I have forward although it is weak enough you can stop the tractor with brakes in high range, but no reverse. I'm showing 600 psi on the test port on the multi-valve body. My shop manual shows a shuttle valve in the center section near the reverse check valve. I removed the cap but cannot pull the shuttle valve out like my book says it should. Could a piece of snap ring have gotten into this valve or another one in the center section & keep the tractor from reversing. I do hear a hiss like fluid bypassing when the selector is in reverse. Thanks for any help. Rick

The purpose of the shuttle valve is to direct make up oil into the high pressure hydrostatic loop. The shuttle valve needs to be able to move easily to allow oil to enter which ever side is the pump return side. When going from forward to reverse the oil flow through the hydrostatic pump reverses flow to the hydrostatic motor. If the shuttle valve is stuck you could be directing the hydrostatic pressure into the charge circuit.

Owen, I can push the valve in. It's springloaded, but moves and feels smooth. The spring pushes it back. I just can't pull it out of the valve body like my I&T book says I should. The servos are moving like they should as compared to my other Hydros. I made a plexiglass plate so I could see them operate. I'm just plain stumped! I'm almost ready to start taking parts off another one & swapping them around til I get lucky...

With the cap on the valve it is centered in the center section. It uses hydraulic pressure to move it either in or out. If you can't pull it out is is only moving one way.

A leaking charge pressure check valve can also allow the closed loop oil to escape in one direction only. You could try swapping the check valves and see it that will change the direction in which the tractor will move.

If you can't pull the shuttle valve out it is only one of two things. Something is causing it to hang up like a piece of crud or you are tackling it from the wrong side of the tractor.

By my book I'm coming out the right way. When I remove the cap I see the tip of the valve with a snap ring holding a washer & spring on it. I can push it in & it springs back out so far but won't come any farther.

If you can see the spring and snap ring you are indeed on the correct side and that does not sound good. You may be looking at going inside to get the center section out. Only good part about that is you can do it with one split and pull guts out the front. On the 656 etc you would be in for a lot more work.
