Farmall H fuel/carb/distributor

I have a 1947 H that I am having issues with. We have rebuilt the carburetor, removed gas tank and cleaned(no rust or sediment), installed new sediment bowl, new gas line and using fresh gas. The tractor ran fine at idle. Pulled mower for around 20 minutes or so before it began cutting out/surging as if it wasn't getting fuel. If I don't let it stand idle for a minute or so it will die. Restarts fine but I get less than 5min mowing between episodes. As I said, starts great and runs great under idle but at high throttle under the load of the mower it cuts out.

Try removing the cap from the fuel tank. The vent hole in the cap might be plugged.

Why did you rebuild the carb, was it doing that before? Or is this something new after the rebuild?

If you're lucky, it'll be the gas cap thing as rustyfarmall said. Makes sense.

But if that doesn't work out...

It's odd that it ran 20 minutes, then only 5 between bouts. If it were always just 5 I'd guess the floats were off - but running 20 minutes makes me wonder.

But even so, I think I'd check that the floats are moving freely, and make sure they're adjusted high enough to let the bowl fill properly.

Of course, the best carb rebuild can be undone by one little chunk of rust/paint/dirt that gets through.

The odds of that happening go way up when you take everything apart and put it back together. Even if you're careful - something somewhere can easily get dislodged.

If this was happening before the rebuild you might want to consider the ignition.

Yep I agree with Rusty and that is the first place to start trouble shooting your problem. If that does not fix it then check you spark ir could also be weak and maybe have a coil going bad but I would start with the cap on the tank

I will try the gas cap, I think that I had tried that before but it is to easy a fix not to try again. This problem was the reason for the carb rebuild and cleaning/replacing of the fuel components. We finished all the listed fuel system fixes and still have the issue. We were thinking distributor. For now i will check the cap though...who knows. Thanks for your suggestions.

Shortly after I bought it, my H started surging, and the governor was "hunting" and it was running like crap. I removed the oil bath air cleaner, and it was all clogged up with crap and sludge. After I got it all cleaned out, I filled it to the line with fresh 30 weight, reinstalled it, and presto.....ran like a charm.

Check to see if the screen where the fuel line attaches to the carburetor is plugged up. Also check the sediment bowl. If there is an inline fuel filter, get rid of it, those seem to always cause a problem.

Feel the coil when it is acting up. My money (2 cents)is a failing coil. If it is too hot to hold your hand on. replace it. Checking the spark when it dies is another analytical tool. yellow and thin not good. blue and 1/2" is fine. Jim

One other possibility--happened to my dad's pickup--would run fine, then be starving for fuel, then die, then later run fine. Mechanic slowly drained carb. and found a tiny seed. It'd float and every once in a while stop the flow of fuel. When the engine wasn't running the seed would float again and the engine would run again.
