(quoted from post at 00:27:40 08/12/11) They were galvanized after about 1943, before that painted red

My Letter Series book mentions a chip chart for Farmalls that listed Aluminum 1111B wonder if that would be it.....what does that translate to today? And how hard would this be to find? Fleet Farm....Tractor Supply... idea's. :?:

Depending on supplier they were either galvanized or same red as the wheels. I have a couple sets of 39 F-20 cast, one set galvanized, one set dipped in the same red as centers. Sme people use aluminum paint, some expensive auto paint they swear is the closest match possible. To me the rustoleum aluminum looks a lot closer to the original galvanized, I compared side by side to the rim I had that was in very good shape when I took the tire off looked like new and it was bright.

Letter series tractors were galvanized. F series were painted red (actually, a red varnish).

Any silver paint that is not too glossy will work just fine.

Or, you have have them professionally hot dipped galvanized if you want "correct" to the N'th degree. Sit down when they quote you the price.

Lastly NAPA used to see a galvanizing paint that I have used on fuel tanks. Never thought to use it on rims, but might work. Also expensive.

Tom, I've suffered from sticker shock but galvanizing was not the worst.
I had the front and rear rims of my farmall Super A professionally hot dip galvanized. Their minimum price for galvanizing a part or parts is 90 Euros (which is roughly US$ 120). So that were my costs, apart from the sandblasting, which has to be done very meticulously.
Later I learned that the galvanizing was most likely electro-galvanizing and NOT hot dip... which makes sense because hot dip galvanizing is very durable compared to electro-galvanizing; my rims were pretty rusty :-(
But my rims are very nice now and will probably never rust again.

Electro-galvanizing makes sense. That would explain why it is such a smooth, even finish compared with "normal" galanizing. It seems hot dip has a tendency to get blotchy or rougher. I would get my rims hot dipped for $120. That isn't that extreme. I assume that is for all four at once?

Yes, for all four rims as batch. The minimum order at the plant where I had the galvanizing done is 90 Euros and a combined maximum weight of 400 pounds of steel for all parts in the batch. So, I could have done two sets of rims for the same price...
Note: this is a large industrial facility, where the bulk of the throughput is hauled by big trucks and trailers. There I was with my passenger car in the queue of trucks; just happy that they serve small customers too.

go to lowes and buy a spray can that says Hammered steel. It is
cheap and works AMAZING looks just like original.

I gots to know. Are you going to spend the coin to have them galvanized? Galvanizing won't shine as it's the oxide layer that's protecting the steel. Are you going for originality or looks?

I have used aluminum paint and humidity eventually caused rust bleed through after 5 years. Touch ups are inevitably needed to tidy it up.

I've also used single stage automotive metallic silver urethane and it looked great. Tough as nails so it held up well too. In my mind, it's the more durable way to go.

They were originally electroplated with zinc.
I have built large containment structures that were hot dipped, after welding them together we cold galved the welds, Rustolem has one that is grey paint with a little zinc in it but this one We found matches the hotdip perfectly and has lots of zinc.

Just checked on line. The only thing that came up when I tried was cotton pickers. We will have to count on somebody with a hard copy.

I have been told that chevy rallye wheel silver looks great and is durable if you buy quality automotive paint. Jim

I love you guys......so many options, so little time, so few tractors to try them on. You guys have given me all the right choices.... I will most likely not go with having them galvanized, sorry. I will most likely go with a paint that I feel will give me the very best look I can get with the most durability.

Thanks again.... options abound.

This forum is great. I love being here!
