Super MTA Starting

I have a Farmall Super MTA tractor, and it doesn't want to start when the engine is hot. Is this a common problem among these tractors or do I have a problem with mine?

(quoted from post at 07:05:39 08/10/11) I have a Farmall Super MTA tractor, and it doesn't want to start when the engine is hot. Is this a common problem among these tractors or do I have a problem with mine?

If the hard starting is because the starter is not turning the engine, or turns the engine but is sluggish and slow, then it might be time to have the starter inspected.

If the engine turns over just fine, but the engine still doesn't want to start, then you may have an ignition problem, or a vacuum leak, or it might be time to adjust the valve clearance.

Mine starts awesome. It starts worst than it used to, but I messed with the timing for tractor pulling. If I put it back to where it is supposed to be I will be perfect again.

My M always started great when cold, but after you shut it off and tried to start it again it would turn slow and kick back juat like it was out of time. I retimed it and still did the same thing. Took a starter off another tractor and it starts perfect now. Another thing to check is your cables, are they making good contact.

Insufficient Bat cable wire size is a primary cause of that symptom. 00gauge wire, as short as possible, will make a great cranker out of it.
To see if it is a factor, put a set of good jumper cables in parallel with your battery cables (duplicating them, and thus making them "thicker". If it starts fine, or better, use heavier cables. Jim

the tractor starts wonderfully cold. When its hot, speeds are varied, sometimes it goes slow then speeds up a little, then slows down again then speeds way up and starts. And sometimes it just takes a few seconds. But when the thing is cold it takes like 2 seconds to start.

Do the cable test I indicated! Automotive cables are often used when replacing the originals. the #3 or #4 wire found in the auto cables have no capacity for 400 amps!. Jim
