How many hours labor is involved in replacing the reverse drive gear in 706, look like i have to take off the axles , lift housing split it in half etc, my customer wants to find out hr to do the job he may just part it out or sell it hole thanks i m jd guy so dont have no idea on the time

If you have never done it before then ya had best figure on about 30 hours . I can get thru one in around 22-23 hours . One word of caution when going back place a heavy rubber band around the input bearing on the top shaft bearing cheap insurance . The gear your going after is the last one out and the first one in . Good splitting stands and rear stand is a must along with a hevy duty cherry picker and i am not talking about a harbor freight one either. Happy Finger pinchen to ya.

#0 hrs is about right, provided it has no cab. But,you dont have to remove the axles, lift cover, etc.Split it at the flywheel houseing and the rearend, hang the transmission on a stand and go to work.while you are in there, replace the TA,and clutch. As I recall,IH flat rate says 20 hrs for a TA job(cabless tractor),wich is esentially what you are doing(laborwise anyway).

i think im behind the part of the transmission that the torque is in, this gear is on the pinion shaft, top shaft in the rear housing

Tractor vet has it right except he is a faster worker than me. Man, if I did that job now it would take me forever. Heavy stuff for an old man. Only saving grace is I work cheap but also set my own time frame.

Flat rate for R & R of the top shaft gears is a 17.8 hours. BUT that does not include any bearing replacement which requires adjustment with shims. Main shaft and/or bearing replacement bumps that up to 21.8 hours. If you replace any of the bearings on the axles or final drives that also increases the time because of needing to adjust the bearings. Washing and any extra items on the tractor also add to the time. The 30 hour figure may be realistic for someone somewhat familiar with the tractor. If they have never done the job before doubling the flat rate time may be closer to the actual time it is going to take.

In your original post on this thread you called it the reverse drive gear. I think the replies you got all addressed the reverse driven gear on the top shaft. If it is indeed the reverse drive gear on the reverse idler shaft the time would be much less. That only requires a split between the clutch housing and rear frame.

A reverse gear with a few teeth knocked out by the park lock may be run a long time without problems as long as it isn't missing two consecutive teeth. Just be careful backing up not to put too much load on the tractor.
