Step ladder

Did the Farmall M, 1949 come with steps or ladder to climb to be able to use...having hard time trying to get on and off this tractor.

Is there a drawbar on it? without one, it would be a real pain getting on and off. With the drawbar on, not too bad.

I had the drawbar off my F-12 for a bit, and it was a pain.

I never thought getting on and off these old row crop tractors was a problem as long as they had a drawbar. However, most of my tractor running days, I was a lot younger
There used to be after-market steps made for most tractors that attached to the axle, but finding one today might be a problem. With a welder, some scrap iron and a little tread plate, it wouldn't be hard to make one.

Dunno Dan,

Drawbar or not, if you are havin' trouble climbin' aboard a M, maybe you shouldn't be on it in the first place?

Just voicin' concern,

Allan

There's somebody who sells steps for the A size tractors (a, sa, 100 etc) on ebay.

Never seen one for an M, but maybe you could just copy the idea.

Here's a link to show you what I'm talking about.

Thanks for all your help to all those who took the time to offer suggestions/ideas. Found what I was looking for. Thnx for your concern Allan, I kind of got a laugh out of your suggestion...all I meant was that there should be an easier way to climb this tractor...you made my day...again thanks to all!

Here's a picture of a step I added to my H. Gives a little more space to put my big foot on, and lessens the chance for slipping.

Sure didn't mean to offend.

Guess my subconscience is working here. My 91-year-old neighbor is still crawling up and down on those old tractors.

It's really painful to watch and he just flat shouldn't be on 'em 'cause one of these days he's gonna take a real bad spill.

Allan

Allen, something to think about in regards to your neighbor. 6 months before my Dad died, I get into a heated argument with him about going to the doctor. He got up out of his chair, and stood in my face and said the following: "It is my choice when to go to the Dr. Give me the dignity of making my own decisions while I still can". I walked out of the room, and went home, angry. During the 1 1/2 hour drive home, I thought about what he said.......and he was right.

If your 91 year old neighbor still has the gumption to climb on his tractor and drive it........God Bless Him!!!!!!! And you for caring enough about him to make the comment.

Recently, at a show, a man who had to be in his late 80's was having trouble getting his Hoveround out of his van. I offered to help, and he said he had everything under control. About 10 minutes later, he walked to my table and said, "I'll take that help now". I did help, and smiled. So did he.

I am NOT getting down on you, just giving you something to think about.

Dantex, if you don't mind me asking, what is the specific reason you find climbing on/off a Farmall M particularly difficult?

Tractors of this era were mounted from the rear. Grip the headlight bar with your left hand, seat with the right. Lead with the right foot on the U-shaped drawbar. Left foot up on to the left axle housing. Right leg up over the seat, and you're on!

Works from the right side as well, just reverse the hand/foot positioning.

If swinging your leg over the seat is an issue, try swinging it between the seat and post.

If you want a tractor that's difficult to mount, try a Farmall C with the stock drawbar, or an offset Cub Loboy with fast hitch and mower deck. Another fun one is an 806 with 38" rubber and the single step.

My SMTA is quite a bit harder for some reason. I think part of it is the extra lever and no fender extensions. There also isn't quite as much room on the platform with the battery under the seat.

sflem849 my 450 is the same way can't swing your leg over pto lever and the TA lever on the other side. I find the M easier to get on And off of.

(quoted from post at 10:05:28 08/12/11) Try getting on and off a M John Deere...I'm 52 and it's da*@ near impossible lol!!!!]
Yeah, one of my uncles had an MT and we had Cs and SCs.... the Farmalls were a LOT easier to get on and off, besides being a much better tractor.

mkirsch, I've been getting off and on any which way I am able to do so, however I don't have a drawbar for this tractor, therefore it makes it more difficult..trying to find a drawbar for it.....also I'm not as flexible as I used to be LOL..thanks for ur suggestion.
