Hunting down WD-9 pistons

Many of you saw the thread with the piston pics. I have decided if I find the right deal on replacements I might as well do the job right. I have done some mild internet searching and haven't found much. Since show season is here I better know all my options for pistons.

The tractor has 4.5" pistons in it to the best of my knowledge. I would like to stick with that. Will the pistons from all the big tractors fit in mine? I guess the question is, what pistons and sleeves will interchange with mine?

(quoted from post at 05:04:09 08/09/11) Call 800-255-0337 if they dont have them there isnt any to be found.

I just called. He said, "No sir, we can't get anything for those."

It looks like you can get new pistons from a few places, but you will have to get the sleeves made. Some people talk about buying 4.4" sleeves and getting them bored out to 4.5". There must be an engine that uses the same size sleeve, but at 4.4"??? During my searching there is a lot of talk about D350 engines/WD-9/600/650s on the Red Power Forum. I may head over there and ask a question. I haven't really been on their forum ever.

WD9 engines used 4.4 bore sleeves and 4.5 overbore. WD9 used sleeves with a smaller OD than SWD9, 600D,650D or D350 engines. You can bore used 4.4 bore sleeves to 4.5 if you can get the 4.5 pistons. 4.5 was standard bore on a D350 engine with a 4-5/8 overbore made at one time.

Thanks for the info. No wrist pin or other connecting rod things to worry about? ie bore my 4.4" sleeves out to 4.5" and find SWD9, 600D, 650D, or other D350 stock pistons?

Standard size piston pins are all the same.
At one time different pistons were used on WD9 tractors. Was a serial # break with different pistons used with 4 digit cylinder head to a 6 digit number head. Don't know all details about the reason or if all later pistons work.
If you have a 6 digit head # the D350 pistons are okay. Not sure with the early head.

The head number won't really help because the head that came on the tractor was a 650 head. Anyhow, the tractor is way past the serial break. I don't know/haven't looked for the serial number, but the PO said it was 50ish IIRC. Truthfully, I don't even know where to look for the serial number.
