Hi all
My Son and I just brought home a W4. It is a fix er uper. A couple of questions to get started. The tag seems to be missing from the clutch housing Is there another way to identify the year? It has a steel shift knob Someone told that they were used during the war years. Also what is the extra hole in the hood for, we have the air, Muffler and a third hole on the right?
Anyone have a spare generator?
Thanks.

That hole is probably for the starting tank with which the tractor would have come from the factory, if the hole is back near the gas tank end of the hood. I have had wartime Hs with metal knobs, so I assume the same is true for the W4.

Check the casting codes. For some reason IH did not want to print the year of the casting. 1931 is A ... 1940 is J ... This should help you come close to the year. Also, the engine number should also give you a clue.

The casting codes are N, 1944
Thanks for the info. It may seam obvious but what is a starting tank? I assume it used a different fuel to start on than ran on something with a lower combustion temp?

Sounds like you have lots of learning about tractors as the starting tank was for gasoline then switched to distillate after the engine was warm. Get an owners manual then an I@T for starters. The I@T will have all the specs for the engine and some repair.
