Where would i find the casting codes for a Farmall A engine block - and once you point them out how are they decoded for month, day, year ect. Thanks, Keith

You can download a catalog from www.oemtractorparts.com. Not only will you have a catalog of their products but also good information like casting codes.

I don't see this mentioned here often - but if you pull your valve cover, the head should be stamped with the date in a readable from like oct 10, 1948

That could of course be a replacement head, and you're probably looking for more info than just the head casting date - but figured it was worth mentioning anyway.

It's a good double check to see if you deciphered the numbers correctly.

This link may help you. There are numerous other posts/replies in the archives on casting codes, part numbers, etc. by, among others, our late friend Hugh McKay .

Casting codes, etc.

1939 is I, 1947 is Q, consecutive letters in between. The format is 1*8*I, or Jan 8 1939. There can be some castings with the actual date. My 1947 M has some of those. The * looks like a screw head.

The code should be behind the steering shaft as thats where mine is almost all engines thats where it will be. Looking at the block lower right side just above the pan towards the front.
