Farmall 400 wide front end.

I enjoyed a pleasent Saturday of running a Farmall 400 disking until the Fast Hitch cylinder pin came out and dropped the hitch to the ground which popped the hitch pin on the disc, pull the hydralic hoses out of the coupler and pull apart the Farmhand oil reserve running to the pump on the pto. It was one of those days.

The only thing left to fix on the 400 to make it operate like its brand new is the wide front axle. The stay rod ball has been replaced by a bolt and it's not very tight so the front end wobbles.

Is the stay rod and the ball on the wide front threaded together, pushed or welded?

How hard is it to replace the front axle pivot bushings?

What's is the toe-in adjustment?

Thanks
Don

Looks to me like the ball shank is peined over with a large drop hammer from the forge room at IH. Probably done while hot. It is recessed so it will be hard to grind out the deformed metal. But I am guessing that the original ball with shank has already been removed and replaced with a bolt.

Parts book lists the ball with shank as one item and the wishbone with ball as another item. I am thinking that one or the other is available as new aftermarket. See if Mike at Steel Wheel Ranch can get those parts. In any event, he will tell you the best way to repair your problem. Might be able to source either part from IH.

Never replaced the bushing but it seems like one would jack up tractor to relieve the weight on pivot. Then you would drive out the bushing and pin. There should be a cross bolt to retain the pin.

Don't know how a service rep or farmer could install just the ball unless the replacement ball stud has threads and a nut.

The bushings are not too bad to replace and are a readily availabble CNH part to get.(It takes 2 of them,I believe???)

AND,I would HIGHLY reccomend making the ball socket greasable for the new ball you will install on the wishbone!!! I cannot believe IH didnt make these with a grease zerk right from the factory !!!! I should post a photo on how to do it. Email me if you need a pic.Not too difficult to do.
