Hi.
I have a new battery and new wiring harness in a 1958 140.
Positive ground,when running batt charges @ 7.25
I need to put the charges on it to start it.With no charger attached I pull approx 3.3 volts. When I pull the battery switch it drops to .30 Any ideas of what I should be looking at? Switch ?
thanks in advance

What do you mean when you say that you "pull" 3.3 volts? Do you mean that you are measuring 3.3 volts? Is that measurement across the battery terminals?

Since your charging voltage looks ok I would have the starter checked at a repair facility that repairs generators, starters and alternators. Hal
PS: You should be using 00 battery cables with soldered ends. Don't have them any longer than necessary.

If I followed what you are measuring (3.3 volts at battery with no load?), it sounds to me like bad battery. Charge it and have it tested.

I agree with Jim.

If the battery drops to 3.3 volts with no-load when you take the charger off, it sounds like a bad battery to me too.

OK...now, how many volts is your battery showing with the switch off, after sitting overnight?

Next, remove one of your battery cables, and with the switch and any accessories such as lights turned off, conect your multimeter--turned t "amps"--between the battery cable and the terminal you just removed. to check for ca current draw, which would indicate a short that would pull your battery down. No current flow at this point is what you want.

A fully-charged 6V battery should be showing 6.3 volts at a state of rest. If you're not showing 6.3 volts or more, you're not getting what you need to operate a good-running starter.

Check your battery cables for resistance. Sometimes battery cables will get corrosion down underneath the insulation...and corrosion adds resistance, and resistance causes a voltage drop.

I knpw this is just basic electricity, but sometimes you have to refer back to the basics on these old tractors...because they were built about as basic as it gets.
