does anyone know if there is a conversion kit to change my grandpas tractor over to power steering it doesnt originaly have it. but he cant steer it and he wants to put it on.

You would have to get the PS valved slave cylinder on a W-400/450. That was the first year IH installed PS on the Standard Treads (and the Row Crops). You would also need a PS pump or priority valve.

Those cylinders are also available as aftermarket but can't guarantee they are sized for SW6. They cost around $300-$500. See picture or goto IH parts book link at bottom. Enter W400 in search box.

You could also remove the steering box and install a four port "Hand Pump" as found on later tractors with hydrostatic steering. Surplus Sales has them. Price may be around $500. They have about a dozen new models but I couldn't begin to tell you which one to order. You will also need a $100 double ended cylinder. I have done it on a W-400 but it is alot of work.

A third option is to get something like a PU truck integral PS box.

Best bet is to sell the tractor and get something with PS. If you are not a fabricator, you will have to.

i am a pretty good fabricator i have fabricated many things for cars but never for tractors. it looks like you have alot of experince in it. selling the tractor really isnt an option he doesnt want to. i would love to try to put power steering on it so i think that is where i will start at. just need as much info i can get. or find out if someone makes a conversion kit or if i can pull parts off of one that already has it or something like that

Another possible alternative is stick a Charlynn PS kit in the steering shaft ahead of the gear box. A friend did this to his MM G and a Case 900 - they both now steer nice and easy. No reason it can't also work on an SW6.

Downside will be cost. You need the torque generator itself, a hydraulic manifold block, shaft U-joint, flow divider (priority valve) and several interconnecting hoses. Figure on $800 - $1,000 unless you can score these parts at a boneyard.

linkage style systems with an integral control valve from a medium duty road truck will work well. All parts except the pump and priority valve are easily obtained!! Jim

Where are you located? Get ALL the orbitor(sp) power steering parts from a "03 modelIH, "05 model JD or newer SP combine. You will need all the parts including the steering axel mounted cylider/with mounting brackets, a manifold with 6 0r 8 ports located usually under operators platforn and steering wheel that is attatched to a motor(can"t think of proper name for this part), prioty(sp?) valve, and mayby a few other parts. As in all power steering applications this would best with a dedicated pump from a combine or a pickup. Before you you partsfrom donar combine take plenty of pictures esp. of how how p.s. cylinder mounts to combine steering axel. I should have a picture of all the parts that I will try to post if you need them. E=mail is open if you have any questions, By the way when you clean that manifold all the ports should be labeled. Enjoy the project, I would think you should be abel to do this for ABOUT $500. Armand
