IH 130 transmission oil

recently purchased a 130 than had been kept outdoors.
looked in the transmission fill plug Friday, the oil was not only very low but quite milky too.
what type oil should I use and in what amount?

can the water in the transmission also leak down into the final drive reservoirs at each rear wheel?

thanks.....

The lube for the final drives is in the pan at the bottom. That lube also gets to the top for the pinion gear and bearing .You need to drop the pan to change the lube. Your tranny and pto can be drained by removing the drain plugs. You can fill with 90wt or even heavier. I use the 150wt.

how much oil does the transmission require?
is there a specified number of quarts or do I just fill to a certain distance from the top of the case?

Towards the front on the left hand side of the transmission case (usually almost behind the brake linkage) there is a small pipe plug. After you've drained the transmission refill to this plug with 80w-90 gear oil. The oil from the transmission does not mix with the final drives. If you have a belt pulley or PTO you will have to check the level after running it a bit as it takes a while for them to fill. Sam

This information is from a 140 manual, but I suspect it will work for a 130:

Without PTO and belt pulley: 4 quarts

With PTO: 4.5 quarts

With PTO and belt pulley: 5 quarts

Just to further clarify one minor point -

To change the oil in the final drive, you must remove the pan, to get rid of the old oil.

To re-fill it, there is a threaded plug higher up for that purpose, once the pan is back in place.

When you see how low the fill line (plug) is, you might be surprised at how low it actually is, but you just have to trust it.

When I drained my transmission for the first time, I got close to 5 gallons out. So I was real nervous about only putting about 1 gallon back in.

As for the milkiness of your oil, that's probably water. Water can get in through the gear shift, especially if the tractor has been stored outside.
