In reference to the discussion now on page 3 that we got sidetracked on, now that I know what you mean, yes the C in the IH enclosed in the C on the older gauges as "duplicated" by OEM does look overdone. I don't have any of those. However, I don't find any pictures in Guy Fay's book with one of the original gauges in it. I have a 47 M and a 48 C that I have done nothing to as yet and both have what I assume are original gauges with only IH on them. I thought the gauges on my dad's 1947 H had IH enclosed by the C, but I have not seen that tractor since about 1960. On the hood, I believe IH appeared in 1945, I have no proof of that. Could that IH appeared on the gauges in 1945 also, but Dave Slater, Jim Becker or gene bender will have to answer that. I have a 41 H, but it has generic gauges that do not look like IH's. I'm not a perfectionest, but if I did have a pre-1945 or whatever tractor I needed gauges for, I would probably just use the incorrect IH ones, as I agree with you on the OEM ones. The IH ones are probably incorrect too, but are at least close.

I thought I had them on both my MD and my H, but I do not. I only have them on the MD. The math doesn't work on either tractor. The H is a war tractor so it should be before the circle C cuttoff. The MD is a 49 and it should have IH. It has one IH and one circle C.
I have seen more than just my MD having the circle C with the non-tractor IH. I have made it one of my mini-missions to figure out this gauge thing.

You checked letter series Farmalls? I never looked at my book this afternoon (and I am lazy and hate to look in the same book if you didn't see it). I got a call from a neighbor who needed help putting straw up. Here in WI most guys have been trying to get it done for three weeks. We (finally) get rain the day after the straw will go. I've never raked more straw in my life!

The new logo could have been put on gauges any time after the logo came out in '44/'45. However, it appears that changing the gauge faces must have been pretty low priority. I have a '47 B with the IHC logo on the ammeter. I don't know for a fact it is the original but I know it hasn't been changed since 1957.

I've seen quite a few IHC logoed gauges on early Cubs (at least '47). Here is the only picture I've got handy of an IHC style gauge. It is reported to be an original from a very early Cub that has been carefully cleaned up. Unfortunately, it is an ammeter so the needle is in front of the logo. But look closely and you can see the serifs on the I and H, doesn't look at all like the man on the tractor.

I looked at the Letter Series book, not saying I didn't miss something. Interesting discussion, but I doubt if I ever buy a tractor that needs the early gauges.

NOW, I finally understand the difference in the original gauges. OEM uses the "man on tractor" for the IH. I am sure I have seen the original gauges, but it has been too long ago. I didn't even know that the "new" IH was man on tractor until I started reading this forum in 98 or 99. All I knew was that the IH before the Farmall showed up, and at some point IHC disappeared from the gauges, replaced by IH.

Here are 2 originals. One is the amp meter off an early H, and the other is the oil guage off an F-20. will privide pics of an original Water Temp guage later today
