I am working on a 464 that has set up for several years. When you start the tractor, the hydraulics work well. After it runs a minute or two the lift and power steering barely work. You kill the tractor, restart it, and they work again a few minutes. It doesn"t matter if the tractor has been run and hour or a minute, it acts the same. The fluid looks and smells clean. Is this a pump or MCV issue or?? Thanks for the insight.

Hi Paul, since both PS and 3pt stop working, I would suspect a clogged filter or the relief valve is stuck open. Try dead heading the remotes. Pull the remote lever until you hear the relief valve squeals.

Thanks for the advice Jim. Forgive my ignorance, When you deadhead the remotes, is that leaving them without an attachment plugged? Where is the relief valve? Also I am unfamiliar with this tractor, what is the foot pedal on the right side under the hydraulic levers? It seems to affect the hydraulics. Thanks again.

I think the pedal you are referring to operates the hydraulic lines, for example, to lift a disc mower into transport position. You plug the line from the implement into a socket, and use that lever to raise up your implement, and gravity is used to drop it. By the way, you refer to the lever as a foot pedal, and, while you might can use your foot to operate it, we always have operated it by hand.

Thank you very much. That "foot" lever actually operates the hydraulic remotes. There is a mystery lever up on the console that I thought might be the remote lever, but come to find out it was the "raise response".

Hi Paul, yes dead heading means pulling the remote lever with no implements connected to the hydraulic lines. The remote hydraulic lever(s) stick out of the sheet metal below the 3pt Raise/Lower lever. The foot pedal by your right heel is the differential lock. The relief valve is in the bottom of the MCV valve. The Raise/Response lever controls the speed that the 3pt will lift or lower.

Thanks again Jim. I will play around with the remote lever and see about replacing the filter and fluid if need be. FYI, I bypassed the differential parking brake and made one that locks the brake pedals down with a ratchet from an old Yanmar tractor that works like a champ.

Paul, my brother did the a similar brake lock on his 684 as someone drove it with parking brake engaged.
The only thing you must be careful with is if the brake wheel cylinders develop a slow leak eventually the pressure will bleed off and the brakes will release.

Jim, Today I changed out the Hy-Tran and filter and cleaned the flow divider and system relief valve. The screen was clogged up and the fluid was milky. Afterward the power steering and lift was working well. The PTO was still weak. I put a pressure gauge on the PTO pressure line and had 250 lbs of pressure, but only 100 lbs on the dead end on the tee. I guess that means time to put in a PTO clutch kit from what I can gather reading the manual and other posts.
