Farmall 140 Possible Oil Leak

Over the last few hours of use, the 140 appears to be developing an oil leak near the coil. After using the tractor a little bit, there will be an oil film over the area just in front and below the coil, all over that general location. I haven't been able to find where the oil is coming from, but it doesn't take a long time for oil to accumulate. It also appears as if some oil is coming out of the oil filler and dipstick, as there will be an oil film near them, as well. Oil pressure is good, about 40 lbs at full throttle warm. Any help and advice is appreciated.

Just a thought. Check the level of your engine oil and of the hydraulic oil in the touch control unit. Your engine may be overfull and the touch control may be low on oil. Hydraulic oil leaking into crank case is caused by a faulty oil seal in the hydraulic pump.
Look at link provided; there are numerous other posts in the Archives about faulty pump oil seals.

Thread on hydraulic pump

I keep an eye on the engine oil, and it is not overfull. However, the hydraulic reservoir does leak at the bottom of the reservoir, and the fluid drips off the clutch hand hole cover. That is the only hydraulic leak I know of.

So, we can probably eliminate the pump from the list.
What I would do is clean the soiled area near the coil and see where the first seeps or drops of oil emanate from after starting and warming up the engine. It may just be the valve cover gasket.
Sorry, cannot be more specific.

Update: I went to the shed and ran the tractor, watching the area of the coil. It seems like there is a little pinprick hole in the coil, because oil will slowly bead on the side of it after I wipe it off. Also, I unlatched half the hood and took the breather off the valve cover. It was almost totally clogged with grease and dirt. I soaked it for 20 minutes in carb cleaner, rinsed it, blew it out with the air compressor, then reinstalled it. Could that have been causing the oil to come out of the dipstick/filler?

Thanks for your help, SF

A coil leaking needs to be replaced. It is now low on coolant (oil) and will heat and burn up. It may be partially shorted now, causing it to heat ans expand the oil. A cheap cure is a new coil. Make sure to match the spec. of the coil you take out. I think some were 12v. Jim

A word of caution on that oil - if it's pre-1979, I'm not positive, but I believe it could contain PCB in the oil.

Very nasty, unhealthy, carcinogen stuff. You really don't want to touch it if you can help it.

Wear disposable gloves when handling it.
