656 pto slipping

Good morning everyone,
My friends have a 656 diesel and they have been complaining that the pto is slipping. We tried turning the 336jd square bailer over this weekend, with no success. Is the pto run by a hydraulic pump or a gear driven. Anyone have any experience with this? I'm guessing there is a clutch that needs to be replaced but would like to know what I'm getting into.

Had the same trouble a couple of months ago when the pto would stop turning when I put pressure on it by lifting the loader. Thought it was shot so I took it to the dealer and it turned out that the adjustment nut on the shaft that goes into the top of the pto and attaches to the on/off lever had backed off so far over the years that the pto was not fully engaging. They tightened the nut and now it works better than when I bought it. Might not be your problem but I would check it first before doing anything drastic. There is also a place on the pto that you can hook up a pressure guage to see what kind of pressure you have from your pto pump. Mine showed zero because the pump wasn't engaging when I threw the lever. I'm no mechanic or I should have probably known that. Cost me $120 to find out but that's a lot cheaper than the $800 they quoted me for overhauling the pto.

If it has been slipping then myself i would at least put a clutch pac in it. The hyd. pressure for the pto comes from it's own small4 pump. And you adjust the pressure WITH a gauge by turning the valve stem up into the nut on top of the stem and this moves the valve open more. First thing to do is GET A BOOK and read , next order in the fitting to install a gauge then get a good gauge to test with , one that will read up to 600 lbs.

If you have any gear grinding or lack of hydraulics with no PTO, it's more serious--the pto drive in the clutch housing might have a bearing out on the driven shaft or the splines in the clutch for live power are stripped.

Thanks for your replies. I"m going up tommorow so I"ll see if I can check the pressure. Just have to find the repair manual first. Does changing the clutches require splitting the tractor or can you do this through the back cover? Would be a shame to have to split it again, we just changed the torque and drive cluthes couple years ago.

The PTO assembly is a self contained unit that contains the clutch, hydraulic pump, and control valve. If service is needed the assembly is removed from the rear housing of the tractor ans serviced on the bench. If the front of the tractor is pointed down hill, like in a ditch, the PTO unit can be removed without draining the transmission oil from the tractor.
