electrical trouble (farmall H gen and fuse)

Just finishing up the restoration on my '39 farmall h. it has the Generator with the cutout relay. the generator checked out good and i have a new wiring harness and ammeter so i should be fine in those parts. but i am getting a discharge of 5 on low lights and 10 when on high. with lights off it reads right at 0, no charging. any ideas as to why it is not charging? do the generator mounts need to be clean so they ground? also every other time i turn the lights on it blows the fuse. any ideas as to what could be causing that? good switch, new wires and working lights. thanks!

Take a look through the archives. John T's charging trouble shooting procedure is the best around. I don't have it on hand but if you do a search It'll show. It helped me get my H running again.

what switch do you have? You should have the 4-position L H D B switch. The field terminal is wired to the light switch. The switch has 2 resistors on it. The switch controls both your charge rate and your lights. Double check what switch you have and then make sure the wires are run properly.

You can adjust the third brush and that will increase the out-put of the gen. Yes make sure everything is grounded well. Are you using the 20 amp fuse. Have you had the gen checked it mite need new brushes and some bearings and a bushing.

The gen checked out good. Also it is the 4 position switch with the 20a fuse. Im going to go cleanup the gen mounting and check the wiring first thing
