Starter draws too much current. Will not turn motor over, I disconnected cable from switch, and used battery charger directly on starter, but it will not work. Starter had worked fine before. Any suggestions?

Pull the starter off and take it to an auto parts store and have it checked. Most have machines that will test it for amp draw etc and most charge you a great big $00.00 for doing it. If it checks bad then guess what you will need to replace it or get it rebuilt. If it test good then either your cables or battery or connections are bad

Can you rolled the motor by hand - it could be your starter is locked up against the ring gear on the fly wheel. They do that if you have bad spots on the ring gear. If that's the problem, loosen the starter about half way off, move the motor by hand to get off the bad spot and re tighten the starter. If that's not the problem then probably your starter is bad. You can take them to someplace like NAPA and have them tested.

The starter drive (bendix) might be slightly worn and has become "locked" into the teeth of the ring gear on the flywheel. Loosen the bolts that mount the starter to the tractor, just enough that you can pull the starter out until you hear a "click" which indicates the drive is now "unlocked". Tighten the bolts back down and you should be good to go.

If you think it's locked , just put in 5th gear and rock the it just a little. Our h did it at times. An m is to heavy to do this with.
