Farmall H: no spark

Just tried to start my '46 H. Won't even sputter even with starting fluid. Suggestions for trouble-shooting? It hasn't been started for about 3 weeks but was fine then. However, it did go through a couple of rainstorms outside without the tarp on it.

6 volt system.

Remove the distributor cap and wipe out the moisture. Wipe off the rotor, and then drag a clean piece of paper through the contact points. Do it several times until the paper comes out clean.

Distributor of mag?? Either way I would check for spark by pulling the center wire off the cap and holding it close to the block. No spark then pull the cap and check for if being wet in side and also check that the points are clean. Does not take long for the points to corrode and that will kill your spark and a simple cleaning can fix it

Just checked and doesn"t seem to be moisture, but the points probably should be changed. Can I get points/condenser at a run of the mill auto parts store?

Didn"t try to start yet as I have the battery out to charge it.

My Dad had a Farmall A with a mag back in he 60's that if you got caught out in the rain with it you were walking home when the mag got wet. I don't know if it was missing a gasket somewhere but water would get inside and then no spark. Dried it out and it worked fine.

If you have a distributor you should check to see if you're getting battery voltage to the coil. Use a volt meter and with the ignition switch in the on position and the points open you should have voltage on both small terminals on the coil. If you have voltage rub the points with some 320 wet or dry until shiny then see if the engine will start. If you have a mag make sure your grounding switch isn't grounding out the points. Clean them too. Hal

Anything more abrasive than the silver side (not green) side of U.S. currency may do irreversible damage to points, but it will clean them.
