i got the 154 in trade, i stripped all the wiring and put new points, condensor, voltage regulator, solenoid, key switch and coil the starter-genertor turns over seems to be ok. i rewired it new ish,
i got diagrams to double check and there are now no fuses or safty wiring just simple basics, when i hook it to a battery jump the solenoid clicks.

which is the top of the solenoid/left or right? there is a bracket 2 bolts one each side, 2 small in front, 1 of the small has a s and one an i, with the bracket at the top, the letters are up side down when setting in front of it, at the bottom is round metal part extending. which is the top of course changes which side is for the starter anbd which side is for the battery, i think it all comes down to the solenoid but not certain.

Can you post a picture of the solenoid? Some of those solenoids wont allow battery voltage to the S/G until the solenoid is grounded. Hal

k, here is what I remember without running to my folks place and looking at the M we rewired. The "i" terminal is supposed to go to the coil on ford vehicles, I think this is unneeded if you are wiring the coil individually. The "s" terminal is what is supposed to come from your ignition switch and it is supposed to be a 12v feed. The large terminal on the side by the "i" is where your battery feed is supposed to be coming from and the side by where your "s" is is where it departs the solenoid and goes to the starter. This thing has got to be grounded. So make sure you have a good ground on the mounting tabs or it won't click over.

Here's the solenoid used by Ford. It will work on a garden tractor too. Hal
PS: You connect to the post with the double nut.

Just throwing this out there - I wish I had a dollar for every time I've seen somebody smacking their solenoids when they just click and the engine doesn't turn over...

Every single time it turns out that it's only a dead battery!

Not saying that's the case here, and it probably isn't... but... just be sure the battery is fully charged!

1. Check battery voltage.
2. Check battery cable terminals [BOTH ends]. If solenoid is remote from the starter, also check cable from solenoid to starter.
3. Check your ground, for both the battery AND for the solenoid.
4. Make sure engine isn't mechanically or hydraulically locked up, by attempting to turn engine over by hand.
5. THEN check starter and solenoid.

Saw this old post. My Cub 154 is not starting. I ran a jumper cable from the positive post of the battery to the A post on the starter/generator, and it turned over the engine fine. So I assume battery and starter are good. I cleaned the terminals on the battery. I thought maybe bad ignition switch so I took it out (what a bear to get out) and checked it out. Seems to be fine. I put it back together and tried to start the tractor again. I heard a faint click under the dash, which I assume is solenoid. How on earth does one get a solenoid out from the dash of a Cub 154. Seems very tight. Some years ago I tried getting the steering wheel off and it is very stuck. Help!!!
