Super C steering

I've got a Super C at work that's getting hard to steer. It's not noticable if I jack up the front end, but it's enough to make your arm tired and sore after a day of mowing. It used to turn like a dream.

I've filled up the steering gear box (that someone else had let go dry) and greased it up and it's still noticable. I'm thinking maybe the bearings in the gear box, but I thought I'd get some opinions before I tear it apart. I've been dismantling a spare gear box and I can't get those bearings out for the life of me so some advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I think its just the nature of the beast I have one and did everything possible, the only way its easier is if I use the 2 point hitch and hook up to something heavy then I have power steering, good luck.

Before doing too much, I'd do an alignment.

That'll make sure your wheels are straight and that you're not fighting against them.

There should only be about 1/8 to 1/4" of toe in.

It may not solve your problem, but it's free, and it's a good thing to do anyways. You might get lucky and find it makes a big difference.

oh - and by bearings, are you referring to the brass bushings? (the long pressed in brass sleeves)

If it's the bushings you're referring to, those can be impossible to push/pull out.

They're slightly less impossible to cut out with a good chisel.

I've found that carefully hack-sawing them down the entire length of the inside of the bushing works best. Work slowly and methodically and you'l cut through it in no time.

... ok, so I'm not so careful and I use a sawzall.

Point is - cutting the bushing will make it MUCH easier to remove with a chisel.

Doing two cuts will make it fall out on its own.

If you nick the casting a bit here and there, it's really not going to matter. Just go easy.

It's got a sickle bar mower mounted on the back already, and it's still hard to turn.

JRSutton-

There's a bearing (ball type) at the top and bottom of the shaft that the gear is mounted on. According to the CIH parts catalog, there's only a bushing at the very bottom. I can't get the "washer" off the top of the shaft to begin removing the top bearing, gear, and lower bearing. Seems like cutting it off may be the only option.

Thanks for the quick responses guys!

(quoted from post at 17:13:07 07/27/11) Those steering sectors arent that hard to rebuild. Does the steering wheel have a lot of play.

It's got a little play, but I wouldn't say it has a lot.
