My grandpa baught a 1950 farmall super w-6 from one of his neighbors and it had sat for 13 years needless to say the gas tank is full of rust and dirt and all kinds of well crap. i tried to take the fuel tank off of it by pulling the cotter pins out but the nuts just keep turning with the springs that are behind them. i dont know what to do to get this thing off i dont want to mess it up because i dont really know where to get parts for it at. any help of how to get this thing off would be appriciated.

Those things are just studs. I would think if you turn long enough the whole thing will turn out and you can get them out that way. It should be easier to get the nuts off when they are in the vice. You can buy new studs.

alright thank you alot. i just wasnt sure if it is a stud or not. i am a car mechanic not to sure about tractors. but i told my grandpa i would give it my best shot to save him some money. do you know where i could get those studs or just buy some threaded rod?

With a bit of luck, once you have the studs out you might be able to salvage them on the bench. As to threaded rod, I believe the studs are fine thread if I remember correctly which could be hard to find. Parts for these old tractors usually aren't too hard to come by and many can be had from you local Case IH dealer. Best of luck, Sam

Once you get the tank off probably a trip to the radiator shop to
soak in their dunk tank. Then there is a process to epoxy the inside of the tank (requires an acid wash first I think). Then primer and new paint the outside of the tank. Then the tractor will look kinda silly until you paint the whole thing. If the tank was that bad, the sediment bowl, fuel line and carburator will likely be gunked up too. Carburator cleaner may do it but I've had best luck cleaning the cast parts in a blasting cabinet. Figure on new gaskets all around. Remember there is a small brass screen in the float bowl inlet which is often clogged up.

You can clean out the tank yourself. I called the RedKote/Northern Fuel Tank Liner to ask them how to clean a tank. IMO they have the best product out there.

Here is a thread I started after I called the company.

Here is the Cliff's Notes version.
(quoted from post at 08:33:17 02/09/11) I just got off the phone with the chemist at Red-Kote. Yes, Northern Fuel Tank Liner and Red-Kote are the same thing. One is dyed red and one is dyed blue, that's it.

- If you think you have varnish or heavy rust use a link chain to break it up.
- 1 part Muratic Acid to 3 parts water for 30 min
- Rinse with water 3 times
- Rinse 2 times with Acetone (MEK will work, but acetone is cheaper)
- Dry overnight
- Coat tank per the can

Here's a .pdf file that is more informative than the can.

John is correct. If your tractor is a 1950 it is a McCormick (not Farmall) W-6. If it is a 1952 it is a McCormick Super W-6. Check your serial number to be sure.

like i sayed i am a car mechanic not a tractor mechanic. i did find out the year after a little reasearch (i was going off of what my grandpa had told me). i got the tank off did the coating and got it all back together and it runs like a champ
