My oil pressure drops to the bottom of the green as soon as the engine gets hot, I'm looking at parts to rebuild the oil pump. What parts usually need to be replaced to increase oil pressure?

Gear and shaft $360
The idler gear below that with 12 teeth, $104
Oil regulating valve $39
Spring below the valve - $12
Gasket below the cover $5
Pickup screen with nozzle into the cover $42
Oil pan gasket $14

Usually what happens is that the gears wear into the bottom cover and/or the bottom cover becomes warped. The cure is to make that cover flat and true again. Some folks place a sheet of emery cloth on a plate of glass and then work the cover in a circular fashion around and around on the emery cloth untill it is flat and true again. Another method is to take it to a machine shop and have it either milled or surface ground.

The one I fixed was so worn that I quickly gave up on the emery cloth trick and instead secured it in a vise and used a large, flat file to "mill" it flat. I know it sounds rather crude, but poor people have poor ways and it worked. I even made my own new gasket, but it would have been better to visit Case-IH and buy one.

(quoted from post at 12:47:27 07/25/11) Rusty - Would you recommend doing that to any engine that has the oil pan off?

Only if there is an existing problem with oil pressure. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I might also add that not always is the oil pump at fault, sometimes the whole engine is flat wore out. Worn cam bearings, rod bearings, and main bearings will also cause a low oil pressure condition.

Took my bottom plate to machine shop that done my head and had them run it over their surface grinder. Looked like new when done, didn't cost me anything.
