Farmall H hydraulics

I recently bought an H with hydraulics to run a small V rake. Cant get any lift out of it. What should be used for oil? Where does the oil go and how do you check the level? Does the top pully need to be running? Does the PTO need to be running? Fill me in plz, red tractors are foreign to me. What should I be looking for when trouble shooting?

These hydraulics are terribly weak. Good systems put out 8-900 psi.

Nothing needs to be running to work the hydraulics (other than the tractor  )

When you pull the rod do you hear a whine or hear the engine load? I know a guy who took the drive couplers out of his 7 Ms to reduce wear and tear and engine drag.

There is a cap on the top of the system that is the fill and level checker. Level isn't super important as long as there is enough. There was a dipstick for the res, but most have gotten lost or broken by now. Run regular hydraulic fluid.

Hook the hose up to one of the ports directly across from each other. If you go to the oddball it won't work right. Are you sure you are hooking to the right hose on the rake? I would assume it is a modern rake with two hoses on the cyl and you have to pick the right one. If it doesn't work, switch them around and it may. You usually know if that happened.

(quoted from post at 08:13:24 07/25/11) 30 weight non det.

30 weight non detergent was recommended when the tractor was new because that was the best there was. Universal hydraulic fluid is the fluid of choice today, and is what most of us use.

The tractor makes no whine at all. I will check the drive coupler. I will also put some oil in and try it again.

Thanks for the help.

If it's out of oil, it's because it has a bad leak, and if it's been running empty for any length of time the pump is pretty well knackered...

You didnt say if the rake has a single way cyclinder or a two way. Your H is not a two way system without making some changes but it sounds like you need someone to show you what you have and explain it good as you sound like you realy dont know beans about what you have. Get a farmer to go over with you and explain how to use it.

Rusty,
Is it true that hydraulic fluid is thinner than straight 30 weight? Might you be more apt to have leaks with hydraulic fluid?
Thanks in advance.

I think the hydraulic fluid is more on the order of 10 weight or maybe 20, but if the hydraulic fluid leaks by the oil seals, it is time to replace those seals because it won't be very long until the 30 weight does the same thing.

You forgot to mention that it is most likely pointless to run SAE 30 because that rake has hydraulic fluid in it. After he cycles the tractor a couple times all he has is contaminated hydraulic fluid.

Exactly. Thanks for mentioning it.
