Oil Pressure Fluctuation

When I first start the Farmall 230 the oil pressure gauge works properly with the needle moving about 2/3 to the right. After running for about 45 min the pressure gauge drops way down and the needle becomes very erratic. The oil level is full and engine seems to be running ok. I have changed the gauge but the problem persists. Any thoughts on what might be wrong? A local mechanic suggests it might be the oil pump. Thanks for your help.

Could be the wrong oil, bad pump, or worn bearings. Try cleaning oil pan and pump screen first.

Do what Walt says, BUT while you are in there, check for a warped oil pump cover plate. They are made of pot metal and have a history of warping on these engines. Search the archives. Many posts about this topic including mine.

On our C the cover was bent and the gasket was blown out, sanded the cover flat and made a gasket, now we have lots of oil pressure!
