Farmall 300 front wheel bearings.

I am sure this has been covered here before, but I have exhausted the search button above.
Replacing the front wheel bearing on my Farmall 300 rowcrop, the inner bearing on the right side was in pieces, race & spindle is ok I caught it in time. I removed the races with a punch & out came a metal retainer on both the inside & outside bearings, I assume these were for the felt seals, and were badly mangled when I removed them. After spending most of the day removing old grease & bearing metal, I am ready to order parts.

I have checked my part book & IT manual, and I am still a bit unsure of the best way to re-assemble these retainers & felt seals. The bearings & races still had IH stamped on them with the part number so I think I am dealing with an original configuration. I have the cast hubs p/n 8274DB.
I have done many cars & truck front wheel bearing inner & outer races, bearings & seals, but have never run across this felt seal installation.
I can get the bearings, seal & races locally, and have seen the kits on line that include the rear felt seal & retainer, but none include the outer bearing retainer & felt.
Can anyone offer any experience in the best way to assemble this correctly ?? Are these felts necessary?
Thank in advance.
Rick

Yes felts are necessary, they keep the dirt out.

Buy a complete kit on eBay for about $50 per side. I've bought several and had good luck on my SC,SC,&300

Thank you Dean.
I finally found the right book !!

The inner grease retainers is what was throwing me off. They were so badly mangled I was wondering where all this extra metal came from.
I guess there is no need to fill the inner hub between the bearing with extra grease as on cars & trucks, just the space between the retainer & bearing, the hub stays dry?

I don't pack the hubs full of grease. But my tractors get minimal use and so far never in the mud.

Back in the day we packed them full and added a grease zerk to the cap, and just kept pumping them full.
Kind of like the bearing buddies today. Grandad should have patented that!
The tractors worked year around in all conditions of snow, mud and manure. I never remember having
to replace wheel bearings on any of Dad"s tractors.
