I want to convert my 350 to live PTO. Is the a bolt on from the back? Do I have to get into the trans through the top deck?

I suspect I'll have to drain some trans fluid.

Thanks in advance.

If you have the transmission driven PTO without TA most likely you are going to have to install the PTO drive line from the clutch pressure plate all the way back to the PTO assembly. If you have a TA assembly then you may be able to get by with just replacing the PTO assembly in the rear and replacing the pressure plate cover, the TA input shaft, and adding the IPTO gear in the front of the clutch housing. Either way it is not going to be a simple PTO swap.

It is hard to believe they were sold with TA and IPTO as options, those options were great additions to those tractors.

I believe TA and IPTO were options because IH didn't want its customers complaining about "forced obsolescence" and being forced to pay for features that they didn't necessarily "want."

Remember, many farms were still <10 years out from having horses. Going from horses to live PTO, live hydraulics, and TA would be a bit of a "culture shock." It would be like going from an ox cart to a spaceship as your primary means of transportation.

How many times have we complained about being forced to buy options and features that we don't necessarily need or want? Happens all the time with cars and trucks. You can't buy a simple, basic pickup with vinyl seats, crank windows, and rubber floors. Nowadays, even the most basic truck comes with air conditioning, AM/FM/CD stereo, power windows and locks...

Most all tractors sold in the deep South were sold without TA. Owners wanted tractors that were simple and reliable, and the less stuff to mess up the better. The "tractor drivers" in the South were not as easy on the tractors as the owner operators of the North.

On the same notion of offering new technology as options:
it's possible that one of the factors in IH's
failure was catering to smaller markets such as
the bare bones 350, limited production
Tobacco Specials, being one of the last tractor
manufacturers offering gas tractors, and
insisting on virtually zero outsourcing to fill
the gaps.
many other factors in there as well--corporate stubbornness and assuming the 1950s-60s
never would end for starters . And you could
argue catering to niche markets can be a
strength...

:)
seems easy to save IH now when 1985 was so
long ago
