240 Farmall not running

I just purchased a 240 Farmall that hasn't ran in over 3 years. It has been under a shed & the sheet metal looks real good. Motor will turn over-But won't hit a lick..Condensor problem? anyhing else you can think of or had a problem with, let me know. It is still a 6 volt system. so I guess positive to positive--negative to negative. Thanks for your comments.

One that has sat for years like that will have a few problems. Sticking rings and or valves to fix fill the cylinders with ATF and walk away from it for a day or 2. Next problem which by the way will not be a bad condenser they do not go bad from just sitting but the points will need cleaned and or replaced. Also you will probably find the carb will need some TLC. But I know this stuff because 99% of the tractors I buy are dead fence row ones and some have had locked up engines and other odd problems but many have been driven off the trailer since a lot of times I fill the cylinders with ATF right after I load them so as to let it do its work on the ride home

You need to pull off a plug wire and have a helper try to start the engine while you hold the plug wire about 1/4 inch away from the sparkplug. Make sure the ignition switch is in the on position. If there's no fire you need to use a test lite or volt meter to see if battery voltage is getting to your coil. With the points open and the ignition switch in the on position you should have battery voltage on both small terminals on your coil. If you have battery voltage clean those points with some 320 wet or dry until shiny then see if the engine will start. Hal

Along this line, one that has been sitting may have had wires chewed my some critter, so checking where you have voltage would be my first thought.
Then if you have voltage and fire to the plugs, would be to be certain fresh gas is getting to the carburator. It's doubtful the gas was drained and it was left dry. There will either be old gas, or "varnish" left over from gas that dried out. Carb should be disassembled and cleaned.

did that tractor come from columbia sc off craigslist. if it was i was interested in it but when talked to the guy he said he didnt know anything about it and it scared me away for the price he told me he would take for it. it was a nice looking tractor by the pic.

external_link has 6 volt but not polarity. given the year made i would GUESS negative ground. go to the parts section for generator and or voltage regulator. then do all the rest mentioned. nobody ever said owning a tractor was easy or simple! good luck!

any engines that sit over time usually require the points to be cleaned espesially if they are in the closed position. they build up corrosion , so either file them, replace them or what works for you. experiensed many many engines like this. but ya lube cyls. also as its part of the get running procedure.check and clean fuel system as required also.

One thing I just noticed on this tractor for the electrical part--the generator and the voltage regulator look brand new---both are painted back & no rust showing--i plan on taking the generator off Monday to see if it is a 12 volt at a repair shop. What can I look for if it has been converted to a 12 volt system? And no battery in it?
